Outdoor Clothing and Equipment
Croeso! Welcome to the Outdoor Gear Homepage for Up and Under!
Looking to speak to someone from our Up and Under outdoor gear store at 490 Cowbridge Road East, Cardiff (CF5 1BL) then give us a call on 029 2057 8579 or why not email our staff.
David Bingham
is our fell walking, long distance walking, backpacking and Greater Ranges travel and high altitude climbing expert. His ranging includes tents, footwear and backpacks.
Cathy O'Connor
is part of the clothing and hardwear buying team and is rounded in most outdoor sports with a specialism in exotic travel having visited Chile, Patagonia, Nepal, India, Thailand, Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia, Barry Island, Zambia, S. Africa, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Chris Shorrock is our trad, winter climbing and Alpine climbing go to person who helps out with ranging in various areas of the shop.
Ben Carter is our sport climber and boulderer.
Cath Raine is our caving and fell running expert with lots of experience as an expedition and group leader.
Our other staff complement these areas and fill in the gaps.
You rely on your outdoor equipment and outdoor clothing to keep you alive when you are pushing yourself in the outdoors, so you should arm yourself with the finest specialist equipment. Specialist outdoor equipment requires specialist knowledge and the foremost brands and for these reasons we select our staff carefuly for their knowledge and experience and we only stock the best.
Within our inhouse selected range you can choose products from brands such as; Arcteryx, Beal, Beast, BetaStick, Black Diamond, DMM, Five Ten, Goal Zero, Grivel, Icebreaker, Inov8, Jetboil, Kahtoola, Marmot, Metolius, Montane, Mountain Hardwear, MSR, Outdoor Research, Patagonia, Petzl, Pod, Primus, Rab, Red Chili, Snap, Sterling Rope, Tenaya, Therm-a-Rest, Warmbac, Western Mountaineering, Yates, Zamberlan, plus many more.
Manufacturing of outdoor product in the U.K. is currently not widespread but we are very lucky to have in North Wales a hot bed of manufacturing excellence. World reknowned manufacturer DMM supplies a high proportion of our climbing hardwear with orders coming thick and fast from around the globe (particularly New Zealand at the moment).
But that's enough name dropping, what are the main events in the Outdoor Gear section of upandunder.co.uk?
Climbing Guidebooks
and Walking Guides are just a small part of the Books and DVD's section, with one of our most visited parts of the site being our photographic print ranges from Mark Salter Images and Colin Prior. Don't forget to look into Navigation for our popular range of Continental European Maps.
Obviously tents are a key part of our Camping section with a focus on mountain marathon, lightweight backpacking, mountaineering and expedition models, but you should also look here for bivi bags, down sleeping bags and matts, multi fuel stoves, hydration bladders and expedition food.
Caving
includes SRT hardwear, tacklebags, oversuits and undersuits, plus the latest options for lighting. So we aim to have it covered whether you are are on a short techincal trip close to home or will be underground in a remote part of the world for days on end.
Climbing
covers a multitude of sins; rock outcrops, seacliffs, winter mountaineering, Alpinism, ice, mixed, big wall, expedition, high altitiude, aid, bouldering, sport and wall climbing. We aim to provide everything you need while you are doing any of these variants or are in training for them. Highlights include our rock shoe, harness, ice tool, crampon and big walling ranges as well as our selection of climbing hardwear that includes bolts, pegs and aid products.
Our Outdoor Clothing range caters for all needs all year round. So if you need down clothing in a heat wave give us a try. Similarly if you need sun hats and shorts in January we should have what you need. Why? Because we understand that; people travel to the opposite side of the world to pursue their passion for the outdoors, people want to buy well in advance of their trip and at altitude its always going to be cold at some point during your trip, even in summer in Africa and Asia. So if you are looking for down suits and wind suits, or perhaps you want to replace your fleece with a softshell or add an ultralight waterproof to your armoury we can help you whenever you need.
Since our early days over 30 years ago we have realised that the basis of a comfortable and safe time in the outdoors is getting your footwear right. For this reason we are particularly rigourous in the assessment and selection of our footwear range and are proud of our staffs reknowned footwear fitting skills. We are aware that people buy to budgets but we don't see why lower priced footwear should be bad for your feet or dangerous to use, so you will see well designed and made boots from brands like Contour, Keen and Salomon sitting along side Scarpa, Meindl, Asolo and Zamberlan in our walking boot range. In Mountaineering and High Altitude boots you will only see the best of the best on our shelves, look out for Boreal and La Sportiva here. Don't forget to take care of your feet and knees by replacing your footbeds regularly and by using trekking poles, fresh socks and gaiters.
Modern Navigation is more than maps and compasses (though it doesn't need to be). Nowadays you can select from altimeters, GPS, digital mapping and pedometers to help keep track of where you are and to tell you where you want to go.
Sacks and Bags includes backpacking sacks, climbing sacks, holdalls, travel packs, daysacks, bumbags and child carriers. Look out particularly for Crux in mountaineering packs, OMM for fell runners and Lightwave, Lowe Alpine and Deuter for walking and backpacking.
Tools and Lighting
covers all those little accessories that you wouldn't/couldn't/shouldn't be without such as headtorches, knives, watches and multitools.
Travel is a part of everyones outdoor experience unless you like camping in your own back garden, so this section holds lots of must haves for everyone, but most people will visit this section of the site for more exotic travel. Mosquito protection and nets, first aid kits, water purification and secure storage are all under this heading.
So we hope you like browsing our website and find our pricing structure (generally between 11 and 16% off RRP, down as far as 35% off RRP) even more exciting!
