A Bothy Bag also known as a Kisu is a portable emergency shelter made from a windproof, waterproof fabric. They come in a range of sizes to suit 1 to 8 persons and are deisgned for you to climb inside in case of an emergency. The structure that holds them up is you sitting on their base and your back and head providing the side and roof poles. Although designed for emergency use, they can also transform a wild windy lunch stop at a summit cairn into a comfortable group introduction to the benefits of wind resistance on the hill. The Vango Storm Shelter and Terra Nova Bothy provide particularly well thought out models which include ventilation flaps, and enough depth of material to wrap under both people and rucksacs so that you don't have to sit on the cold, wet ground. Some will have a window so you can keep a weather eye out. If you want the leats weight and bulk and don't mind paying we recommend the Terra Nova Superlite Bothies.

Some people may choose to use a bothy bag as a shelter to replace a tent or bivi bag in extreme situations when travelling light on a highly technical multiday mountaineering desperate. If you are the kind of person to be contemplating this then you probably don't need much in the way of advice from us other than good luck.
