Waterproof down sleeping bag for Greater Ranges and Winter Alpinism.

The Crux Torpedo 900 is a waterproof sleeping bag designed for sleeping through the night on high altitude, high latitude expeditions. To achieve this the concept is to have the lightest most compressible bag possible that is as watertight as possible. This will mean that you will be happy to carry the bag even on arduous climbs and trips, you will be able to sleep in it anywhere; tent, snow hole or ledge, all in comfort, in any conditions.

The Crux Torpedo 900 is ideally suited to climbing Himalayan peaks in the 6,000m to upper 7,000m category.

Only down is able to give the warmth for weight and pack size required for such demanding situations. The Crux Torpedo 900 uses the best down available, 850 fill power Polish goose down (it's ethically sourced too) and has a comfort rating of -8C and lower limit of -18C (EN13537).

Whilst the waterproof 2 layer eVent outer isn't the lightest, most compact fabric going, the fact that it is durably waterproof means that both you and the down won't get wet on snowy and damp bivvies, and that you won't need the extra weight and bulk of a bivvy bag for snow holing and cold weather camping. The breathability of the shell helps internal moisture management meaning that your down won't freeze and get bulky and heavy. Each slant wall baffle not only reduces cold spots they are made from mesh and are therefore very light. Each baffle is laminated directly to the eVent outer, unlike other waterproof sleeping bags where a waterproof outer is stitched over an existing bag, and thus the Torpedo range save loads of extra weight. The zip is a highly water resistant Riri Aquazip which uses diving suit technology to keep the zip as robust and watertight, yet light and as easy to use as possible.

The medium sized bag has 900g of down, an overall weight of 1500g and 188cm internal length.

All in all, this is a fantastic bag for mountaineers operating up to 7,500m during the summer or for fast and light 8,000m peak dashes. It is equally suited to winter ascents in the Andes, Caucasus and lower Himalayan peaks.

Rob Smith - Offa's Dyke In One Sitting - A new unsupported FKT

I set out from the official start (or end) of the Offa’s Dyke National Trail in Prestatyn with the intention of running (jogging, hiking and a lot of hobbling) – the 177 miles to the other end of the trail at Sedbury Cliffs, just outside Chepstow. I did finally get there, just over 3 days later, setting what is, for now, a fastest known time for a self-supported completion of the trail.
