Stuff sacs are designed for use with gear that needs containment to keep its bulk low when travelling. Classic examples of this sort of gear are sleeping bags and duvet jackets. We stock a range of these sacs in various sizes for the type of jacket or sleeping bag or pile of kit that you have in mind. Basic stuff sacks come from Outdoor Designs, and even lighter mesh bags can be found here with Travel Accessories.

Waterproof stuff sacks are great for use in your rucksack. A day of heavy rain will have water coming though almost all rucksacks (unless they are the Fastpack or Wildtrek!). It is of utmost importance to keep your sleeping gear and spare clothes dry on multi-day trips. For this we have a range of lightweight waterproof bags in various sizes (in the Rucksack Accessories section) and a waterproof compressible bag suitable for sleeping bags and bulkier items here. Ortlieb also provide a range of waterproof compression sacks, with a valve to let out excess air.

In some cases the gear will benefit from being squashed down even further for ease of carriage and that's when compression sacs come into their own. They are heavier but provide more valuable space in your rucksack. In addition to the waterproof ones we have a range of different sized compression sacs from Outdoor Designs. If you have lost the compression bag for your Rab sleeping bag, we have spares. If you want a specific model, let us know and we'll go hunting for it.

Down sleeping bags shouldn't be stored in compression sacks or the small stuff sacks you would carry them in on a trip, as long-term squashing will damage the ability of the down to loft and keep you warm. All the down bags we sell come with a cotton or nylon storage bag, but if you're lost yours, have a new one!

It is worth noting that the most efficient way of packing a sleeping bag is to not put it in a bag at all but to cram it into gaps at the sides of your rucksack once packed. This means that it then takes up no space at all effectively. This solution is often impractical as it prevents access to kit during the day and will mean a wet sleeping bag if it rains, but it's great for situations where you travel from one place to another without recourse to the inside of your rucksack and will unpack everything at your destination.

An alternative for the extreme Alpinist worried about weight and bulk is to use a light 30 litre rucksack like the OMM Jirishanca as a stuff sac when on the lower part of the hill, but once the sleeping bag is not needed and the summit is accessible with minimal gear, then use the pack as your summit bid rucksack.
