Trends in the bolting of cave systems have changed over the years. Originally, spits and hangers were used wholesale. However as hangers are repeatedly screwed and unscrewed from these bolt heads, the threads get mashed and accidents have occurred. In this country Eco hangers are steadily replacing Spitts on most popular routes but a selection of 8mm bolts and hangers are still usefull for many of the less popular descents. Petzl Simple and Twist hangers. are the most widely used hangers for this purpose. Abroad, a variety of 8mm, 10mm and fixed hangers are in use, check with guide books or local cavers for the area you are going to.
