Descenders

Whether you're going for a quick trip down Garlands Pot or dangling about in Dihedral, you'll need one of these!

The Petzl Stop is the most popular descender, being easy to use and having the backup of the automatic brake (remember to lock it off if you've stopped though!). It can also be used instead of a chest jammer on short pitches. The downside is that it can get a bit warm on long descents of a dry rope (think Alum pot North West) so take a squeezy bottle of water with you!

Another option is a rack. This is another great option as you can vary the friction, allowing you to deal with different gradients and weights and can be used on double ropes.

We have added the pirana and other fig-8 descenders here as they are ace for canyoning! They are much simpler and easier to use for novices than caving descenders, and crucially, will come straight off the end of a properly rigged canyon rope, meaning no faffing trying to get off the rope while stuck under a waterfall!

Long haired adventurers - we have learned from experience (painful experience...) that long hair is best kept out of the way of any of these items!
