Cord and Tape
We stock a wide range of accessory cord and rope from 2 to 11mm in diameter. This fulfills a wide variety of purposes: cord for rock protection such as hexes, prussik loops to effect hoists, escape up ropes and protect abseils, abseil cord for running away from a rock face without leaving expensive gear behind, replacement shoe laces and in the case of our favourite cord customer, dog training equipment. Also included in this range is some of Beal's Dyneema cord. This is very strong but shouldn't be used on hexes, nuts, etc. as it has a very low melting point and can burn through itself when knotted. Where it comes into its own is for use as a fixed line as it is much stronger than normal accessory cord of this diameter, and it does not stretch. If you want to fly a really, really big kite, this is the perfect cord.
We also hold a wide range of tape from Beal and Troll, both flat and tubular again for use as abseil tat or for making slings of a specific length. For slacklining, we use, recommend, and regularly fall off Beal 26mm Plain Flat tape.
We also have para-cord (string!) for emergency repairs, replacing worn out guy ropes, using as camoflaged washing lines etc. etc.
Shock-cord (bungee cord) is great for attaching crampons to rucksacks but it also works as a training aid for attaching to your finger board. Make a loop to step in for support, to lengthen your training session.
Climbing rope can be found under its own section, as can pre-sewn slings. You will find floating rope for river rescue in the Canoeing Rescue Gear section, and Semi-Static (low stretch) Rope for rigging, Industrial Access, Caving, abseiling and general movement upon a rope in the Rope section of Vertical Rope, Access & Rescue Kit.
Please Note: We recommend (in accordance with the BMC) that accessory cord and tape be replaced regularly. This is due to their high susceptability to UV degradation, which is higher than on full-length ropes due to the greater surface area to volume ratio.
Cord or tape threaded through equipment such as hexes should be rotated at regular intervals so that the same section of the length of material is not always housed within the body of the hex.
