The ultimate ice climbing and dry tooling axe.
Designed to take on serious ice and mixed climbs the Petzl Nomic has allowed climbers to push the limits of the winter game and with the new improved Nomic this looks set to continue.
The new 2011/12 design has kept the same shaft and pick angle as the original Nomic but has had the handle improved with an adjustable grip rest to give a better ergonomic feel (when first released in early 2011 there where some problems with the adjustable grip rest but this has now been fixed by the Petzl boffins). A small hole has also been made in the handle to allow a spring leash to be attached to the axe.  The other major improvement has been in the head design. It is now possible to add an adze or hammer (sold separately) to the axe making it a more suitable for Scottish or hard alpine climbing. To give the axe even more features it also includes a modular weight attached to the pick. This can be removed for dry tooling or when you need to be very precise with the axe or added to give more thud when climbing hard water ice.

  • Weight: 605g per tool
  • Ergonomic moulded handle provides multiple grip options
  • Handle length is adjustable to fit the size of your hand and glove
  • Shaft and handle design limits pick shift when switching hands
  • Modular head equipped with interchangeable pick and weights
  • Optional extras: adze and hammer
  • Griptape on the upper handle for grip and insulation
  • A serrated blade under the Griprest gives better hold

Rob Smith - Offa's Dyke In One Sitting - A new unsupported FKT

I set out from the official start (or end) of the Offa’s Dyke National Trail in Prestatyn with the intention of running (jogging, hiking and a lot of hobbling) – the 177 miles to the other end of the trail at Sedbury Cliffs, just outside Chepstow. I did finally get there, just over 3 days later, setting what is, for now, a fastest known time for a self-supported completion of the trail.
