Even in winter when snow covers most of the features of a chosen route, the safest method of fashioning running belays and belays is to find rock. Therefore, it is always worth carrying a range of rock gear, including a handful of pegs for iced cracks. Often, however, the climber will have to resort to the slightly less permanent substance of frozen water for his/her protection.
The range of states that frozen water occurs in requires a wide range of protection devices to make each piece as safe as possible.
Snow Protection
Snow is best used for creating belays by the use of the T-axe method, but in slushy snow deadmen come into their own, although this will still be much poorer than a rock belay. The DMM Deadman has sufficient surface area to provide the best possible safety margin in such circumstances. It can also be used as a snow shovel. You can find more of these in our Avalanche Safety section.
Ice Screws
The "Screw in, screw out" form of ice screw are the most versatile of screws, and represent a significant step forward from the drive-in style. They are good for use in glacial ice and should be carried for the purposes of crevasse rescue. They are less damaging to the snowpack, and therefore wide gauge versions are the best type to use in poor quality ice and in snow (such as that found- if you're lucky- in South Wales). The ease and speed with which they can be placed is very good, as they require no hammering, have many cutting teeth, polished sides, sharp threads and long handles. If things get really thin you can try a DMM Bulldog, but screws are the most important method of protection for waterfall ice climbing. We hold stock of several different models from DMM, Black Diamond, and Grivel.
We also have a range of racking and storage devices for your screws. See the Black Diamond Ice Clipper and Black Diamond Ice Screw Up (we like these, they're better than the name suggests!), Petzl Charlet Ice Flutes and Simond Rack. The Grivel Candela is pretty handy too.
Winter climbing pro is often less reliable than summer pro, and shock absorbing quickdraws (screamers) will play a very important role in protecting yourself. Check out the DMM Ripstop in our Slings and Extenders section. DMM also recommends the use of their Revolvers, as the rotating bearing in the top of the crab will reduce the impact force on your top runner in a fall.
