Climbing Trousers and Shorts
When it comes to climbing, the rules for trousers differ from walking. With a walking trouser, you generally favour products that will keep you warm even when damp or wet, and in summer favour lighter weight materials. With climbing, durability becomes a major factor, along with warmth in winter conditions, or weight in the summer.
(Most of our climbing trousers can currently be found under our Clothing header)
Our best summer offerings come from climbing brand Ocun, with the cotton-rich Drago Pants, a durable pant that is still comfortable, and looks great day-to-day; the lightweight Mania Pants and Shorts, which are less durable but better on a warm summers day; and for women, the Noya Pants and Shorts, a very comfortable lightweight trouser. All of the range is blended with elastane for stretch, have a gusseted crotch for increased range of motion and a low-profile waistband for comfort under a harness. George and Jim, two of our Outdoor colleagues, can often be found in shop or at crag in the Drago and Mania, and are willing to sing their praises.
For cold and dry Autumn/Winter days, a heavier trouser is beneficial, with minimal cotton content so you can stay warm if it does start to shower. Again, a bit of stretch and a gusseted crotch so you don't rip the seam is beneficial, and reinforcement to the knees or seat is also beneficial, depending on your climbing style. A few of our heavier walking trousers tick these boxes, including the MontaneTerra Missions, which are worn by Jim.
For the cold and snow of ice climbing, a heavy duty waterproof trouser will often be required, with reinforced kick strips for resistance to crampons. The pinnacle of our range at the moment are the Mammut Nordwand Pro Pants, which are tough, flexible and waterproof, being designed for climbing movements. George and Chris, both avid winter climbers and our clothing ranging experts will be happy to talk your ear off about the benefits and drawbacks of each trouser in store or on the phone, though we always stress that fit is important, so come on in and try them on in store if you are able!
