Down Jackets and Expedition Down Suits

Natural down is a requirement in the coldest of environments, and when low bulk and weight as well as warmth is required. It is still the best and lightest thing around, bar none. However this is only true of high quality goose down and there are many brands on the market selling clothing of low quality down or feathers (often duck) and simply relying on the reputation of down to sell it.

The major weakness of down is its inability to insulate effectively when wet. This means it is not particularly suitable for use in rainy or temperate climates as once it is wet it is very difficult to get dry and lofted properly again. This is where synthetic filled clothing has a massive advantage and with recent developments in technology it is now better than ever!

The quality of insulation provided by down garments is produced by a mixture of the down type, the amount of down used, the ratio of down to feather (the more down the better the insulation), the fill power (its ability to resist compression and to loft- the higher the fill power the better the down),the durability of the down itself and the way in which it is used, ie the construction of the garment. See the Down Sleeping Bags page for an in-depth discussion of down properties, statistics and qualities. Essentially the best down products will use a good amount of down of a high fill power (800+), with very few feathers. Cheaper and less effective garments will often use a high percentage of feathers and will use a low fill power of down (650+). In this instance you would be better looking at synthetic fibre jacketsas they have certain advantages over down products such as the ability to work when wet, something very useful in Britain!

Most of the down we sell is housed within a range of high quality Pertex shells. Pertex is highly wind resistant, light-weight, high wicking (so it stops condensation collecting against the down) and water-shedding (this is enhanced by use of a Durable Water Repellent treatment). There are a number of different grades of Pertex in use, with each jacket using the most suited to its ideal use. Where the lowest possible weight is required, Quantum GL is often used whilst where increased durability and water-resistance comes into play Endurance can often be found.

Crux have long been known and loved at Up and Under as providers of top end, bombproof mountaineering gear. Their rucksacks and waterproofs are amongst the best around, and now they've combined 165g of the highest quality 800 fill power Polish goose down with waterproof, breathable eVent to create the Plasma Jacket. This creates a pretty unique product as it retains the warmth of down but negates the downside that when it gets wet it is next to useless! This follows the warm reception of their previous eVent and down creation, the Crux Torpedo sleeping bag.

Do you operate at the three poles, North, South and altitude? Then the Rab's Expedition range of jackets, salopettes, booties, mitts and suits is the only sensible option, but don't worry because these products are absolutely the best!
