What do we want from Fell and Trail running shoes?

Well the most important thing is minimal weight. Every gram extra carried on your feet is multiplied by every step you take, and adds upmonsterous amounts of extra energy used over the course of a day (and remember there will be a lot of uphill so this will be even more difficult). So, a lightweight shoe is a must, but this means reducing the protection for the upper foot making wet and/or dirty feet a liklihood. In most cases fell shoes will let water through, as the uppers are often made up of a lightweight mesh. However, this also means that the water will be let out just as quickly, allowing your feet to dry while still on the move.

The next most important thing is support. Pure fell running shoes need to be snug fitting in order to support your feet on uneven ground and to reduce any chances of your feet rolling around, and possibly causing ankle injury when moving through rough terrain. Shock absorption is limited in pure fell shoes due to the softer terrain expected and the need to keep weight low, whilst trail shoes from Inov8 and Montrail give increased shock absorption and protection.

In order to achieve a combination of fit, support and feel all of the shoes in the fell and trail running catagory have a stiffened rear 3/4 of the shoe whilst the toe section is softer for maximum dexterity. This front flex is important for maximum traction on uphill sections, feel on uneven surfaces and grip on descents. It is important to try to use the front of the foot on descents to reduce jarring effects on the knees.
