Tools
No one should be doing anything in the outdoors without either a knife or a multi-purpose tool. Who knows when you are going to need to cut that rope to stop your partner pulling you over the edge, or when you are going to bump into a sad-looking horse with a stone trapped in one of its hooves.
It's more likely, however, that you are going to have to cut through some tat at a belay or to set up an abseil in the Alps, or even more so that you will need to open that bottle of beer. If you've ever been found trying to open a tin of beans with a rock (admit it!) or a plastic food pouch with your teeth, these tools are for you.
Knives and tools also prove useful in around the house and in the car. Just take a look at the range of features that you can choose from: loads of different blades, screwdrivers, openers, scissors, pliers, files, tweezers, tiny little saws and yes, tin openers.
The original and finest Swiss Army Knives come from Victorinox. Some of the beefier ones come with a locking blade as well. As well as being incredibly useful little things, they make good gifts for outdoorsy types and gadget lovers.
Climbers, kayakers, divers and mountaineers should check out our rescue knife from Fox Cutlery.
Petzl also do a couple of neat, low profile climbing knives that can be opened with one hand and easily clipped with a karabiner. There are more knives for climbers on the Rack Accesories page and under nut keys in the Climbing section. For paddlers, we have a handy range of water rescue knives and folding saws.
Lock knives add a dimension to knife safety and handling as the blades won't fold back on your hand, allowing you to be more aggressive in your knife action (don't mistake my meaning of aggressive though). The pliers and some of the features on the Leatherman tools also have locking features.
Lighting
Now it's time to shed some light on our lighting range!
If you are after caving lamps, caving batteries and caving bulbs, etc. then you can read on, but you will be better catered for in our specialist Caving lamp section.
For those of us who need some form of lighting to navigate, pitch or illuminate the tent, fish, work on the car, go into the attic, have an evening barbeque, or go to the toilet in the night in the outdoors without falling over, this is the right section.
General outdoor torch users should always attempt to keep their hands free from a safety point of view, but this is also useful in 1000s of other situations, and Petzl's range of headtorches cover every eventuality.
If you want a handheld torch, however, then the most durable option is the excellent range from Maglite, after all these are the chosen options by most security companies and the U.K. Police Force.
We stock the full range of normal and halogen bulbs for all of these torches as well as all the relevant batteries, and some extreme cold weather use batteries from Energizer.
For sea-fishermen, family camping and partying you will want a lantern to hang up while you hook your rag, discuss the days events, play scrabble or catch up on the latest gossip. Black Diamond do a great LED lantern - the Apollo, or you can choose unleaded petrol lamps from Coleman, or gas lamps from Camping Gaz.
