Industrial helmets must meet much more stringent standards than mountaineering helmets. They often look similar, but their testing and application is very different, and so they should not be confused. Like anything else, the right helmet depends very much on the job it has to do, and broadly-speaking there are two options when considering helmets for industrial applications.
1. Groundwork
Helmets for work on the ground have to have chinstraps that break under a load of less than 25kgs. The reason for this is so that if the helmet is caught it releases the wearer before they can choke. This is part of the EN397 industrial safety helmet standard.We do not currently stock any helmets that are suitable for this kind of work, although we can get them at need.
2. Work at Height
Regarding chinstraps, the reverse is true of helmets for work at height (and for mountaineering), as the chinstrap has to stay fastened at forces of up to 50kgs. This is so it stays on the wearers head in the case of a fall with multiple impacts. This is known as EN12492 standard. All of the industrial helmets we stock satisfy this standard.
The helmets we stock are described below:
Petzl Vertex Best
This meets the chinstrap standard for work at height as described above. It also meets all the optional requirements of EN397, protecting the wearer against lateral deformation, use at cold temperatures, electrical insulation and molten metal splash.
Applications for this helmet include work on rigs, pylons, factories, construction, and anywhere where you are working at height with near electrical or chemical sources.
Petzl Vertex Vent
This meets the same mountaineering chinstrap standard as the best, but is ventilated with closeable holes in the shell. This means that it does not meet the standards for electrical insulation and molten metal splash, although it still protects against lateral deformation and is useable at cold temperatures.
This helmet is suitable for any work at height where ventilation might be desirable, and chemicals, molten metals and live eletrical cables will not be a hazard. This could include tree surgery and stage work. Note this helmet also meets all the standards for a mountaineering helmet, and the closeable vents might make it a good choice for winter mountaineering.
