Petzl Ascension Work

A handled version of the Petzl Basic ascender ideal for ascending fixed ropes.  The Ascension handles well even in gloved hands due to it's wide, ergonomic molded handle.  This also helps to prevent uncovered hands from freezing to the device.

The Ascension uses a toothed cam and has a self-cleaning slot which optimizes performance even if the ropes are dirty or frozen.  The two holes at the base of this handled ascender are often used to connect a footloop such as the Petzl Footape Adjustable or the Petzl Footpro Adjustable to aid climbing and a double lanyard such as the Petzl Spelegyca to allow safe movement between intermediate anchor points.

The larger hole at the top of the device can be used in conjunction with with a karabiner (the Petzl Ok Oval for example) to attach the device to the rope which is useful for back-up belays or hauling.

Suitable for 8-13mm ropes, this ascender has an excellent design. The moulded handle is mounted on the chasis by 2 linking bars which lever the cam onto the rope (rather than the cam being sprung onto it like some designs). This results in a large clamping force. There is a hole in the cam which you can use with your trigger (first) finger to release the cam off the rope quickly when you wish to move the ascender up the rope. The aforementioned lever action also assists with a quick release too and this certainly helps with overall effort if you are doing a lot of ascending, if you are big-walling in particular.
