A canoe or kayak cag (or Cagoule) is an over-the-head style jacket that has seals on the waist, wrist and neck. The cag offers protection from wind and rain while the seals help to keep water out. With buoyancy aids and helmets, it's the most basic item of clothing for paddlers.

Styles of Cag

  • Centre - Tough and durable, Neoprene seals on wrist, full neo or velcroed neo necks and elasticated single waists. This are brightly coloured for safety.
  • Recreation - For newcomers to the sport who want a basic entry level cag for mainly use in the summer with easily adjustable wrists, waist and neck we suggest the Palm Vector, Yak Quest and the Yak Strobe. The Palm Vector and the Yak Quest are also available in kid's sizes.
  • Sea and touring - Start with light, less breathable fabrics, velcro closures and no hoods. As you move up the ranges you get latex wrists, stiffened hoods and highly breathable fabrics. The ability to be able to close off openings efficently means you are able to vent when warm, and stay dry when conditions are not favourable. Most of these cags tend to be in ighly visable colours for safety.
  • Whitewater - River cags come in a few different styles: summer weight, semi dry and dry, and the quality of wrist and waist seals varies from basic velco closures to very techy latex and neoprene options. A double waist seal, for example, will give you less leakage around the spray deck.
Many of these cags work well combined with wetsuits when you are starting out, but to get the most from the top end of cags it is recommended that they are combined with waterproof canoeing pants of some kind.

To beat the protection offered by the top end of sea and river cags, the next option is to move to Dysuits.

To keep your cag working in tip top condition we suggest some maintainance is carried out on it periodically, if you look afetr the seals and keep the items clean they can look after you for a long time.
