Palm Aleutian (Surface Immersion Suit)

Sea Kayaking Drysuit or Sea Kayaking Clothing

The Palm Aleutian is a drysuit that has been totally designed for the sport of sea kayaking. To get into the Aleutian there is a rear access zip that runs across the back of the shoudlers. Once you have got your feet and legs in, put in your arms, pull it over the head and you can then zip your self in.

Palm Equipment have packed the Aleutian full of features and some of those are detailed here. The Palm Aleutian is constrcuted from a highly breathable multi layer fabric and the feet of the suit are constructed from the same fabric but they do features a cordura sole, However to make sure that the feet continue to perform well you need wear some extra paddling footwear such as the nova or kola wetboots. The base of the trousers also feature an adjustable neoprene ankle so that you can obtain a nice seal with your boots. To ensure that you dont wear the knees of the suit out while you are knelt down loading your sea kayak they have reinforced them with a tough 300D cordura. The same cordura is also then placed on the seat and elbows again to help increase the durability of the key wear areas.

Moving on up to the waist there is then a second zip that runs horizontally across the crutch that is also ideal for that much needed toilet stop. Female paddlers should also have a look at the Shewee and the Whiz Freedom to prevent themselves from having to remove the full suit! Also in the vacinity of the waist, there is an elasticated drawstring that will prevent the trousers from dropping down. Finally in the waist area, Palm have also incorporated a twin waist seal so that when wearing a spraydeck such as the Playboater Shock Deck you then obtain a good seal to prevent water running down the face fabirc of the suits and into the waist tube of the spraydeck. Resulting in a full boat!  

On the chest area there is a double sided kangaroo pocket that offers a degree of storage but more importantly it also features a fleece liner to keep your hands warm while not paddling.

The seals on garment are made of latex and these are located on both wrists and also the neck. The latex wrist seals then have a further neoprene and fabric cuff that is adjustable and also offers a degree of protection to the latex underseal. While on the neck there is a latex seal that offers protection from water ingress and then to make sure that the consumer is warm while out at sea there is a zip front collar that when fully done up and the hood is positioned over the paddlers head, you are guaranteed to be nice and snug.

The majority of the suit is manufactured in a high vis yellow, but on the shoulders, peak of the hood and also on the arms there is a mixture of reflective piping and reflective paneling to make sure that when paddling in poor weather conditions you are easily visable.  

If you would rather a two piece combination why not also look at the Palm Alaska and use that in conjunction with the Palm Sidewinder Bib. As an alternative to the Aleutian drysuit with a rear zip access, you may want to consider the Peak UK Adventure or Explorer both of which feature a zip leg access system. 

In order for you to get the maximum degree of performance and breathability from the Aleutian we would suggest that you wear it in conjunction with some base layers such as the Nookie Thermal Base Pants and also the Thermal Base L/S Top. While to achieve the highest levels of safety in the form of a sea kayaking buoyancy aid we would suggest that you look at the Palm Kaikoura or the Peak UK Adventure Zip.
