What makes a kayak good for fishing or angling?
First, you need great stability so you can move on the boat without
worrying about tipping over or making too much noise in the water. An open cockpit, sit on top
style is handy so if do fall off bringing the big one in, you can turn
it back over and clamber straight back on. It also means easy access to
all your gear. There should be plenty of hatches and
storage options to keep everything tidy and out of the way, and
maybe a big well for your catch. Cleaning fish bits off your sit on top
is simple too, and much easier than getting the inside of a closed kayak clean (but if
you want to do some general kayaking too, we have closed cockpit fishing
boats like the Dagger Blackwater and Dagger Approach Angler). Many
models come equipped with caster and flush mounted rod holders, and some
have a built in anchor system or a place for a fish finder. You can also
take a look at the non fishing specific models of Sit on Top or Touring Kayaks, and
look to mount rod holders and anchor trollies
yourself.
Boats with foot
pedals or small electric motors
can be found on the Open Canoeing page, and we
have lots of sit on tops that can be used
for all purposes- light coastal touring, a bit of surfing, some fishing,
playing in the sea or the lake with the kids- but if fishing is your
game, this is the page you want.
The range is big enough to let you find the
perfect boat for you, but we like to tell you which ones we (and our
customers) like the best to get you started. The Ocean Kayak Prowler
series provide purpose-built fishing machines in different hull shapes
and lenghts to suit your needs, with the flagship of the fleet being the
Ocean
Kayak Prowler Ultra 4.7 XT. Smaller budgets can be catered for with
Ocean
Kayak Prowler Elite 4.5 or Ocean
Kayak Prowler Trident 15, and smaller spaces with Ocean
Kayak Prowler Trident 11.
The
Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 Angler is another fast boat, good for
getting you to your favourite spot quickly so you get a maximum fishing
time from your day. Slightly shorter, the Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120
Angler is not as fast or as big, but is still well kitted out for
fishing with two flush and one spinner rod holder, and plenty of
hatches.
Fishing doesn't have to be a solo pursuit. We
have plenty of sit ons for two and even three paddlers in the Sit On Top section, or
the Ocean
Kayak Malibu 2 XL which was designed specifically so two can fish
from the same boat.
