What makes a boat better for sea kayaking? They are longer
than touring kayaks for greater speed, must deal effectively with wave
action and wind, and often have a drop skeg for enhanced tracking.
We stock a range of one and two person sea kayaks ranging from
basic and simple Valley Aquanaut Club which is housed on the Club,
School and Group Kayak page, to the well featured personal use plastic
boats like the Dagger Cortez, to the highly sophisticated and
customisable P & H Capella.
Be sure to check out the sea-going options in our Touring and
Recreational Kayak section as well.
The choices from Dagger and Necky will suit most users, but
everyone should take the time to admire the premium ranges from P & H
and Valley even if they aren' t planning serious ocean or expedition
paddling.
For safety, we recommend all sea kayakers carry a bilge
pump, and we carry a range of paddle floats in inflatable, solid
foam, and self-inflating styles. Silva produce a range of compasses
especially for sea navigation, and elsewhere in tha catalogue, we have a
selection of Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
By touring we mean paddling trips on flat or calm water, from an
easy hour to a full day or more. Our recrational boats include fun
things for playing with the family, easy to paddle kayaks with generous
allowances made for comfort and safety, dinghies, and canoes with foot
pedals and small motors.
What makes a boat better for touring use? They are longer
than many conventional river kayaks for greater forward efficiency, but
are also wider and offer greater stability than higher specification sea
kayaks. They will have offer fittings such as hatches and bulkheads for
storage of your packed lunch, and may have a drop down skeg for
improved tracking and large easy access cockpits.
For short coastal day trips, we recommend the Venture Kayaks Easky
and Dagger Charleston series, which both tick all the boxes listed above
and are equally popular with staff and with customers. You should also
look at our range of dedicated Sea Kayaks.
The Tek Sport Rockhopper is designed for playing about close into
the shore. It is tough and makes a great toy.
At the other end of the scale, the Valley Rapier series are sleekly
designed for speed at sea, for racing, fitness, or just for the fun of
it.
For safety, we recommend all sea kayakers carry a bilge
pump, and we carry a range of paddle floats in inflatable, solid
foam, and self-inflating styles.
What makes a boat better for recreational use? They should be
open or have large easy access cockpits with a more relaxed fit with
the emphasis being on comfort. There should be carrying capacity for
your lunch and gear, and most of all, they should be aimed right at
having fun.
If you will mostly be on rivers, see the range from Pyranha,
Dagger, and Liquidlogic. It will also be worth looking in our River
Running and River Play sections. We have pages for high quality
inflatable kayaks and one for fishing kayaks and canoes too
