What makes a kayak good for fishing or angling? First, you need great stability so you can move on the boat without worrying about tipping over or making too much noise in the water. An open cockpit, sit on top style is handy so if do fall off bringing the big one in, you can turn it back over and clamber straight back on. It also means easy access to all your gear. There should be plenty of hatches and storage options to keep everything tidy and out of the way, and maybe a big well for your catch. Cleaning fish bits off your sit on top is simple too, and much easier than getting the inside of a closed kayak clean (but if you want to do some general kayaking too, we have closed cockpit fishing boats like the Dagger Blackwater and Dagger Approach Angler). Many models come equipped with caster and flush mounted rod holders, and some have a built in anchor system or a place for a fish finder.
Boats with foot pedals and small electric motors can be found on the Recreation and Touring Boats page, and we have lots of sit on tops that can be used for all purposes- light coastal touring, a bit of surfing, some fishing, playing in the sea or the lake with the kids- but if fishing is your game, this is the page you want.
The range is big enough to let you find the perfect boat for you, but we like to tell you which ones we (and our customers) like the best to get you started. The Ocean Kayak Prowler series provide purpose-built fishing machines in different hull shapes to suit your needs, ranging from the wide, formidable Prowler Big Game to the fast, efficient Ocean Kayak Prowler Elite 4.5. The Big Game in particular has a huge carrying capacity for larger fishermen, more gear and your tremendous catch too.
The Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 Angler is another fast boat, good for getting you to your favourite spot quickly so you get a maximum fishing time from your day. Slightly shorter, the Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120 Angler is not as fast or as big, but is still well kitted out for fishing with two flush and one spinner rod holder, and plenty of hatches.
Fishing doesn't have to be a solo pursuit. We have plenty of sit ons for two and even three paddlers in the General Sit On Top section, or the Ocean Kayak Malibu 2 XL which was designed specifically so two can fish from the same boat.
In addition to the boats, we have a range of Fishing Accessories on the Canoeing Equipment page. These include Scotty Rod Holders, anchors and various other bits and pieces for customising your fishing boat. Accessories for sit on tops, including new hatch covers, back rests, scupper plugs and fins, can be found there too.
