Caving Helmets

This page is the place to find helmets that are suitable for caving.

Helmets for caving will generally have a moulded plastic shell and may have a polystyrene insert. This type of helmet is made to withstand repeated impacts (within reason!), which is useful when you still have to get out of the cave after bashing your head on the roof!

Other helmets designed for climbing are made of polystyrene with a thin shell (a bit like a bike helmet). They are ultra lightweight, but generally not suitable for caving as they are damaged upon impact (a bit like a bike helmet!) and you'll still need to get out of the cave!

Some helmets, like the Petzl Trios, have a caving light already attached. If you buy a separate headtorch and helmet there are a couple of ways of putting the two together:

If your headtorch has a headband, like the duo, you can attach it using the clips on your helmet. This increases the flexibility of both products as you can use your helmet without a torch and your torch without a helmet, but increases the chances of you ending up without a light in the cave. We were very worried once, in a vertical system, to find our friend's headtorch but not our friend! (he was ok, he was carrying a spare). Top tip - cable tie your torch to the helmet!

Alternatively you can buy a torch that needs to be fixed to the helmet. This will then need to be attached permanently to the helmet, and depending on the model can involve modification of the helmet by drilling holes in it! This technically invalidates its certification as PPE, but if holes are in sensible places and there aren't too many it shouldn't affect the strength of the helmet too much, although we can't guarantee that. If you choose this method you should be aware of the risk of lowering the impact protection of the helmet. On the upside, unless you lose your helmet you won't lose your light with this method, although it is still a good idea to carry some spare batteries and a backup torch.

For mini-cavers or just for those with small heads, we stock the Petzl Picchu and Edelrid Ultralight junior helmets.
