Chalk Bags

We stock a wide range of chalk bags, to fit all requirements, from lightweight microbags, through medium sized bags (often with extra features such as key and cash pockets and toothbrush holders) right up to large boulder bags. Everyone makes a range of chalkbags, and we've chosen the best from DMM, Crux, Troll, Boreal, prAna, Lowe Alpine and Red Chili.

A chalk bag is the only piece of climbing equipment you can choose solely because it looks cool. As such, they make great gifts for beginner climbers and for pros. As Deep Water Solo fans know, you can never have too many. The prAna range are among the most attractive and most beautifully finished, along with the DMM Trad, Zion and El Cap. Troll's super furry range (see right) are guaranteed to catch attention, or a super-tough option is the surprisingly light Crux Kevlar. For those who are really into lightweight design, Crux's Dynatec weighs in at a miniscule 35g.

On the other end of the scale is the massive Font Bag from DMM, which is more chalk bucket than chalk bag and will stay upright up on its own, standing faithfully beside your boulder, as will the Mad Rock Chalk Pod, which will even spring to attention.

Lowe Alpine and Red Chili produce a range of chalk bags so broad there is bound to be just the right thing in there for everyone. The Edelrid BC Bag will fit onto Edelrid harness rails, but if you just want a bag to put chalk in, have a look at the DMM Gym Bag.

Some models come with a waist belt, or you can get one from prAna or Troll. If you'd prefer a clip, there are some here, or there is always the old school prussik cord option. We can't possibly list all the myriad options, so enjoy your browsing!

Chalk

Chalk takes three main forms nowadays: the traditional block and chalk balls by BleauStone, and Metolius superchalk, which has a formula that is specifically designed for climbers rather than gymnasts and weight lifters. Superchalk comes in a refillable chalk ball sock, or as straight powder in bags which can be used loose or in the socks.

For those that have become real addicts, blocks are the best, giving a thick coating to the neccessary areas. The chalk used in these blocks is lower grade magnesium carbonate and often binds together more than other finer grades (though that used by Bleaustone is as good as it gets and still gets our vote for most outdoor use. Remember though, with the environment at the forefront of all our minds, that cutting down on the use of chalk in the outdoors is a good idea. It is visually detrimental to the rock and also can erode it when the alkaline chalk reacts with the rock (eg Font sandstone). Excess chalk can also effect the pH of the ground beneath a crag, having effects on the local soil and vegetation, and anyone who has breathed in a lungful of chalk at an indoor wall can see the benefits of reducing chalk use.

A good step towards this is a ball rather than loose or block chalk, because waste is reduced. Another option is Metolius EcoChalk. It's not resin either, so doesn't have those nasty side effects. A little of this goes a long way, and you can also use at it Font, where other drying agents are frowned upon.
