The most important part about travelling in the outdoors is finding your way around safely. To do this you need to be fully versed with good navigational practices using map and compass. While it is not our place to teach people how to use compasses, it is important to get the compass that suits your purpose the best. Compasses for boats and kayaks can be found under Canoeing Equipment, and thumb compasses for mountain racing are on the Fell and Trail Running page.
The main body of our compass range comes from Silva. These are fine compasses designed for accuracy and serious use.
The Silva Expedition 15 series make sighting easy, an important part of navigation. They are also highly robust and easy to grip when wearing mitts. Optional features such as clinometers make this range of compasses the best choice for professionals, expedition mountaineers and skiers and geologists.
The Expedition range all have long base plates for accurate navigating (the Expedition 54 in particular is highly accurate as it features an additional optical precision sighting system) along with a holed base plate for position markings. The Expedition 4 is our most popular choice for mountaineers and more serious hill walkers, and the Suunto M3 D suits a similar use.
Our slightly more general range of compasses is aimed at the gentle end of hill walking and scout and centre use, which is covered by the popular Field 7 through to more dedicated walkers and mountaineers, covered by Ranger 3. The latter has improved levels of accuracy over the Field 7, due to the greater base plate length making sighting easier. If you're buying a quantity for a school or group, you might want to think about a Compass Storage Pack as well.
Our selection also includes educational large compasses for use in the classroom.
