What makes a boat better for playboating use? They are much shorter than a normal river boat, allowing for greater manoeuvrability and have low volume "slicey" ends for minimal resistance when cutting through the water. Adjustable fittings that mean the paddler can get a snug fit for greater control. Fast, planing hulls are good for surfing and spinning, and aggressive edges for carving.

For around £550 you can get a pretty good playboat. The Dagger G Force is available in 3 different sizes with all the design features you need to do what you want in the water.

If you are looking for a playboat with top of the line fittings and lightweight construction for optimum performance, why not take a look at the Wavesport Project or Pyranha REV, both top end models available in 3 sizes with high spec fittings that offer great comfort and control.

The Riot Astro comes in two sizes, and is designed for high performance, super-responsive playboating.

Good outfitting is essential in a playboat, and we have everything you need. Kayak airbags, boat bits, a huge variety of paddles, spraydecks, repair kits, and everything else you might want to put in your boat can be found on the Canoeing and Kayaking Equipment page.

What makes a river running boat? Balanced volume to prevent back looping (this can occur when the back of the boat is drawn back into more aerated water, which generally results in an interesting backward somersault...). A comfortable seating position which makes paddling for prolonged periods of time much more comfortable is essential, and good forward speed will help you move efficiently and avoid back looping and getting drawn back into nasty stoppers. Space in the kayak for extra items such as throwbags and split paddles for when the river eats your first one are also a good idea.

More casual paddlers might want to look at our Touring and Recreational Kayaks as well.

Looking for a river boat for your kids? Gone are the days of kids rattling about and making do in adult sized boats! Now there's a range of child-specific options available including the Dagger Dynamo, with optional thigh braces for more experienced juniors, and the Robson Supersonic, which offers slightly more play potential and greater manoeuvrability.

For a basic or intermediate adult river runner, have a look at the Robson Moonster a great all round river boat that will suit most sizes of paddler- or the Dagger Redline, Infrared, and RPM series. These three models are still as popular today as the day they were released, due to their easy handling and good quality outfitting. The Infrared and Redline are well proven for river running and surfing, and the RPM is a little longer for greater forward speed. The Dagger Approach will work well for flatter touring as well.

The Dagger GT Series consists of the GTS, GT, GTX and the GT MAX. This family of river runners that offer great comfort and handling for all abilities. The range starts for the smaller paddler with the GTS.

If you are looking for a boat with the best fittings and finest river running designs and construction, we like the Wave Sport Diesel, which is still as popular today as the day the first one was released. The Pyranha Ammo has made a name for itself among advanced paddlers. It is the new 'play creeker' and river runner, reasonably short with a high volume so that you can play parts of the river you never thought you'd be able to! The well known Pyranha Burn is another well known and much loved boat, available in 3 sizes for a great fit and with top spec outfitting.

The much admired Liquid Logic Hoss, Lil Joe and Trigger series all very similar in shape but offer a great fit for all sizes of paddler, and check out the Riot Thunder. It's sure to cause a stir!

Kayak airbags, boat bits, a huge variety of paddles, spraydecks, repair kits, and everything else you might want to put in your boat can be found on the Canoeing and Kayaking Equipment page.

February Staff Newsletter

February was a busy month in the shop. As well as a number of reps coming to see us, and a number of visits to make, we also attended the Run, Walk, Crawl Brecon to Cardiff Ultra, and hosted a climbing shoe demo with Tenaya at local bouldering wall Spot Climbing. We still managed to get out, and members of Team Up and Under could be found in many parts of the UK; including in the Brecon Beacons, the Lakes, South Downs, Scotland, as well as further afield in Chamonix and George L still in Thailand.
